Sunday the 23rd saw another one-day mini-tournament in Calgary, Canada. Out of respect for the worlds I've delayed posting the results until now. (i.e. I was too caught up in WSC fever to post them. <grin>)

Before we get to that, club #374 would like to congratulate Joel Sherman on his world championship title. We also send our congratulations to all of the other WSC participants, especially our own Albert Hahn, who finished a respectable 39th.

On to the tournament. 32 people attended this tournament, which I believe makes this our best turn out ever for a one-day tourney since we started them in April. This resulted in there being four divisions instead of the typical three.

Highlights

Newcomer Teri Tetreault dominated the novice division, as many of us expected. Having only been to the club once, he nonetheless practices and studies with another club member (Michel Demers), and knows all of the twos, threes, and common bingo stems. Speculation is that he will now have to move up to the Intermediate division next tournament, where he will really get a chance to earn his stripes.

Allan Simon, another newcomer, finished second in the same division, losing to Teri in the final round.

In the Recreational division, Louis Fernandes came back from 150 points behind to win a game by one point. The interesting twist to this story is that he did it against his ten year old son, Leon! Leon is a repeat winner of the Novice and Recreational divisions in several tournaments.

Personally, I was glad to shake off a terrible slump I've been having. My high loss (and most memorable game) came against Bill Payne. He countered my three bingos with one of his own and a 78 point Q play. At the time I thought I had made a serious error in the endgame, but upon recreating the game last night it looks as though I didn't have much of a chance to win given the tiles I drew. My final rack was CGLRUUU.

The Recreational division was the closest battle in a division we've seen here in a long time. No less than 5 people were in contention for top honours going into the final round.

We can only hope that our next tournament on the 14th will be as exciting!
