University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar Monday October 24, 4:30-5:30pm 213 Koffler Center SPEAKER: Stephen Gustafson (UBC) TITLE: Schroedinger maps near harmonic maps ABSTRACT: The Schroedinger map equation is a model for ferromagnets, as well as a geometric (and nonlinear) version of the linear Schroedinger equation. A basic open problem is whether or not finite energy solutions can form singularities in finite time. We describe some results for equivariant Shroedinger maps from 2+1-dimensional space-time into the 2-sphere, which have energy close to the energy of harmonic maps. This is joint work with Kyungkeun Kang and Tai-Peng Tsai. ------------------------------------------------------------ University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar http://www.math.toronto.edu/appmath/ 2005-2006 organizers: Pieter Blue pblue@ math.toronto.edu Almut Burchard almut@ math.toronto.edu Bob Jerrard rjerrard@ math.toronto.edu ------------------------------------------------------------
