University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar Monday Noveber 21, 3:10-4pm 1230 Bahen Center SPEAKER: Jean Taylor (Courant Institute) TITLE: Mathematical Challenges in Modelling Crystal Growth ABSTRACT: Many materials are made up of tiny crystals, composed of the same stuff but at different orientations. Various challenges in creating mathematical models of the time evolution of such materials, driven by a reduction in total grain boundary energy, will be discussed. The current model, encompassing some recently elucidated physics, is joint work with John Cahn. ------------------------------------------------------------ University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar http://www.math.toronto.edu/appmath/ 2005-2006 organizers: Pieter Blue pblue@ math.toronto.edu Almut Burchard almut@ math.toronto.edu Bob Jerrard rjerrard@ math.toronto.edu ------------------------------------------------------------
