TITLE:    A new type of singularity formation in certain critical 
	  nonlinear wave equations

ABSTRACT: A discussion of recent work in collaboration with W. 
	  Schlag and D. Tataru on singularity development for the 
	  critical wave maps equation with target S^{2} as well 
	  as for the focussing quintic wave equation on R^{3+1}.
