University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar Friday 16. November, 1:10-2:00pm 6183 Bahen Center SPEAKER: Al Baernstein (Washington University in St. Louis) TITLE: Moment inequalities for equilibrium measures in the plane. ABSTRACT: The equilibrium measure of a compact plane set gives the steady state distribution of charges on the conductor. We show that certain moments of this equilibrium measure, when taken about the electrostatic centroid and depending only on the real coordinate, are extremal for an interval centered at the origin. This has consequences for means of zeros of polynomials and for means of critical points of Green functions. We also study moments depending only on the distance from the centroid, such as the electrostatic moment of inertia. ------------------------------------------------------------------ University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar http://www.math.toronto.edu/appmath/ 2007-2008 organizers: Walid Abou-Salem walid@ math.toronto.edu Almut Burchard almut@ math.toronto.edu Robert McCann mccann@ math.toronto.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------
