PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar Friday 28. September, 1:10-2:00pm 6183 Bahen Center SPEAKER: Joseph Fu (University of Georgia) TITLE: Lagrangian currents and geometry: facts, conjectures, questions ABSTRACT: Algebraic Lagrangian cycles are a well-established device in the study of singular algebraic varieties, giving us a "microlocal" view of how the tangent spaces of the singular sets interact. By the same general principle, measure-theoretic Lagrangian cycles---although we understand them only dimly--- provide an opening into the study of more general singular objects, e.g. convex sets, or crumpled sheets of paper. We describe the basic facts establishing the essential connection between the objects and the cycles, then begin to connect the dots in the general theory, with emphasis on the missing links. ------------------------------------------------------------------ University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar http://www.math.toronto.edu/appmath/ 2007-2008 organizers: Walid Abou-Salem walid@ math.toronto.edu Almut Burchard almut@ math.toronto.edu Robert McCann mccann@ math.toronto.edu
