Speaker: Huaxiong Huang, York University Title: Extensional Flows of Viscous Threads Abstract: In this talk we will discuss the drawing of viscous threads with thermal effects. We will use glass microelectrodes and optical fibers as two examples and focus on the nonlinear coupling of flow and temperature equations. We will show that asymptotic analysis can greatly simplify the computation and provide useful insights for the understanding of these physical processes. It also leads to some interesting nonlinear equations which could be subjects of further mathematical analysis. This talk is based on joint work with Jonathan Wylie (City Univ of HK), Robert Miura (NJIT) and Peter Howell (Oxford).
