University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar Friday 9. November, 1:10-2:00pm 6183 Bahen Center Speaker: David Lannes (CNRS Bordeaux and McMaster University) Title: Modified Schrodinger equations for short pulses. Abstract: I will first review various approximations for the solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic systems with fastly oscillating initial data such as: the so called envelope, full dispersion, and Schrodinger approximations. Precise conditions on the range of validity of these models will be given and the problem of their extension to short pulses and more generally to large spectrum waves, such as chirped pulses will be discussed. A new class of modified Schrodinger equations with improved frequency dispersion will then be derived and rigorously justified, and I will show some numerical computations which confirm the theoretical predictions. ------------------------------------------------------------------ University of Toronto PDE/Applied Math/Analysis Seminar http://www.math.toronto.edu/appmath/ 2007-2008 organizers: Walid Abou-Salem walid@ math.toronto.edu Almut Burchard almut@ math.toronto.edu Robert McCann mccann@ math.toronto.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------
