A Tour of this Site
If you are new to this site, here are a few good pages to visit:
- If you're a younger student, try out your basic knowledge of
algebra: see if you can find out what's wrong with this classic
"proof" that 1=2. The computer
will give you feedback on your guesses!
- If you're more advanced, see if you can find out what's wrong with
a more subtle, complex-number
"proof" that 1=2. You can find
out some interesting things about complex numbers there, too.
- You can look at other classic fallacies
as well.
- To see some mathematics at work in a real-life situation, you can
look at some questions (and hints) about
how to figure out the mathematics of a simple traffic flow model, and
can watch a computer simulation of
it that you can customize however you like.
- You can try playing a game against
the computer and see if you can win. There's some interesting mathematics
behind it; see if you can figure out the pattern behind the moves! Hints
are available.
- You can try some other games as well, either
just playing them as simple games against the computer, or looking at
the mathematical ideas involved.
- You can check out some
questions and answers asked by a variety
of students and adults and answered by our staf.
- You can also look at some more detailed explanations of
common topics.
That should keep you going for a while!
