Information about the term test
As you'll know, the midterm exam takes place this coming Tuesday,
October 18, 11:10-1:00. It's the regular class time, but the location
will be the examination centre.
Make sure to bring your student ID , and place them on
the table, picture up. We are obliged to check ID's!
No tools allowed: No course materials, no formula sheets, no
calculators, no cell phones, indeed no electronic "gadgets" of any
kind. I recommend brining good pencils and erasers (see below).
We will hold special office hours, as follows:
-
Thad: Friday Oct 14, 1-3 -- Lounge of 10th floor, 215 Huron
- me: Monday Oct 17, 9:30-12:30 -- my office BA6112
- Ozgur: Monday Oct 17, 1-3 -- Lounge of 10th floor, 215 Huron
- Debanjana: Monday Oct 17, 3-5, -- Room 301 of PGB, 45 St George
Note: My regular office hours on Tuesday, October 18 are cancelled.
Material covered: Everything we covered in class (or as required reading), up to and including bases and dimensions. (But not yet linear transformations.)
You should know the basic definitions and theorems, and we may ask for them. However, you won't be asked to recite them `verbatim'. We will provide the axioms
of fields and vector spaces, so that you don't have to memorize which one
was labeled VS5 and which one F3. You should be able to give the shorter proofs, but don't try to `memorize' -- try to `actually understand'. Of course, I may ask you to give a short proof of something that was not proved in class.
You can find term tests from most previous years on the web; this may be a good way to prepare. A good starting point is the website from
2014-15 ; it also has links to websites from earlier years.
In contrast to earlier years, this exam will be a "crowdmark exam". In short, this means that every exam booklet comes with an identifying bar code. After the exam, all the exam sheets will be scanned, and then graded online similar to the homework. Some
implications of this procedure:
- DO NOT WRITE OR DRAW ON THE BAR CODE.
- It's probably a good idea to use pencils and eraser. (Since the exams are
scanned anyhow, using a pencil for a crowdmark exam is quite ok!)
- You must write solutions on the page of the given problem. If you run out of
space, you can make use of two `overflow' pages at the end of the exam. But you have
to indicate it clearly, i.e. write "continued on page 10", or similar.
