Team Canada returned from the 1996 International Mathematical Olympiad at Bombay, India with six medals -- three silver and three bronze. The event marks the first time all six Canadian team members earned medals.
Four of the six students are from the Toronto area. Sabin Cautis, 17, and Soroosh Yazdani, 18, are students at Earl Haig Secondary School. Adrian Chan, a student at Upper Canada College, is the youngest student ever to represent Canada at the age of 15. Richard Hoshino, 17, is a student at University of Toronto Schools and a contributor to Mathematical Mayhem, a mathematics journal published here at the University of Toronto.
Derek Kisman and Byung Kyu Chun both reside in Alberta.
Kisman, Hoshino, and Yazdani earned silver medals in the two day competition on July 10 and 11. Out of 42 points, the cutoffs for gold, silver, and bronze medals were 28, 20, and 12 points respectively.
The team as a whole placed 16th out of 75 countries which participated in the Olympiad. Rumania was the top country; followed by the United States, Hungary, Russia, England, and China.
IMO training for the Canadian team was held at the Fields Institute at the University of Toronto and the students were coached by Georg Gunther and U of T students J.P. Grossman and Naoki Sato, both who have participated in past Olympiads. Ravi Vakil of Harvard University served as deputy leader for the Canadian team.
In last year's IMO held at York University, Canada placed 19th out of the 73 competing countries. Next year, the competition will be held in Argentina.
Recent IMO winners who are currently students at the University of Toronto include Grossman, Sato, Edward Leung, and Cyrus Hsia.
A selection of photos taken from previous IMOs is available at Naoki Sato's album page.
