What Exactly Does MASSU Do?
A good question.
MASSU is one of many student unions active at the U
of T,
each of which represents the students of a different department
or group of departments. In this case, the Math and Statistics
departments, which also provide the Applied Math and Actuarial
programs.
Student Unions began life as tools for the students
to
collectively make their voices heard on important issues. Though
we still retain that duty, the role of student unions here has
gradually shifted.
Essentially, our duties can be divided into three
parts:
political, social, and academic.
As a political organization, MASSU has kept a low
profile.
We are a part of ASSU, which argues on behalf of lower tuition
and longer refund periods. However, MASSU has yet to
independantly work on this area, at least in this incarnation.
Socially we have been much more active, and will continue to
be. Events such as movie nights, pizza socials, and whatnot are
part of our plans, and we have already held some, either last
year or this.
Academically, we sell old tests. We also hold
the
occasional academic seminar. And, though we don't have much
practise at it, we are here to help if you have an academic
grievance.
Naturally, as time passes our involvement and duties
will
continue to shift, grow, and change.
If you have other ideas for what you'd like us to be doing,
stop by and tell us.
